It's 10K season now!
I love 10K season, even though I am far from a 10K runner. I love coaching people to a 10K, and given they are so plentiful I like that you can go into them with the attitude of Prefontaine;
"The best pace is a suicide pace, and today looks like a good day to die".
It doesn't really afford itself to my favourite race format of 24 hour running, but the 10Ks come thick and fast.
Mess one up - you can go again next week. And Mess that up, you can go again the following week. And even on the night - mess it up and you only have to dig in for a short time to reach the finish line.
So when we come to training for it - it's good to simulate your race pace in order that your body and mind know how it will feel, but also to push harder than it in short efforts, making race pace slightly more comfortable.
And when you want to bridge the gap to the group in front - just before the turning point at the Helensburgh and Dumbarton 10ks are handy if you're about to hit a headwind - those extra efforts you've made in tarining will pay off.
Here is this weeks session;
