Along with consistency - specificity is another key to training.

You need to train for the race you're racing for. Look at Keeley - trained for a month for 400m and it didn't go that great midweek. Now back at her favoured event and didn't win for the first time in forever. A month of focus elsewhere perhaps.

But it might be for long term gains - if your eyes are on a marathon - it can be worthwhile to spend some time getting some speed in the legs and training for a half, or even a 10K - to really focus getting some speed in. That way - you're increasing your potential over the marathon distance. You can't run a 3 hour marathon if you can't run a 90 minute half.

That's one of the reasons why I still do short reps at a time when my main aim is for 24 hour track running. The main aim is always the track but if I can tick off some shorter races and increase my overall potential - what's not to love. Just make sure your focus is on the main goal...

Here is this weeks session:

If you can't make it but still want to run around the park of dreams - we are also heading to the Run Rhaw park on Thursday night for a 5K time trial - deets on the Strava club.
